Cabo Frio is the biggest and most developed town in the Região dos Lagos (Lakes Region) of Rio. Cabo Frio means "Cold Cape"; this name comes from the low temperature of the sea water. This happens because there is a submarine stream coming from South Pole which emerges near the coast of Cabo Frio. There is a constant wind blowing from northeast, which has sculpted fine white sand into dunes.
There are 9 beaches in Cabo Frio: Forte Beach (Praia do Forte), Peró beach (Praia do Peró), São Bento beach (Praia São Bento), Siqueira beach (Praia do Siqueira), Sudoeste beach (Praia do Sudoeste), Dunas beach (Praia das Dunas), Foguete beach (Praia do Foguete), Palmeiras beach (Praia das Palmeiras), and Unamar beach (Praia de Unamar). Some of the tourist attractions in the beautiful city of Cabo Frio are the Feliciano Sodré bridge, the Nossa Senhora da Guia chapel, the church of São Benedito, located in Passagem neighborhood, the Nossa Senhora da Assunção church and the Municipal Theatre.
Before going to the beach, check out Gamboa street, known as the Bikini street; Gamboa has more than 200 shops that specialize in selling beach wear at low prices: bikinis, sarongs, sandals, shorts, etc.
The most famous and crowded beach in Cabo Frio is Forte beach, where the fortress of São Mateus was built in 1620; the fortress affords a panoramic view of the town. Frequent music shows spring up on the esplanade. In summer, it is difficult to find a spot to sunbathe, but it is an amazing beach for sailor and surfers.
