Barra da Tijuca is the longest beach in Rio, with 18km (11.1 miles) of soft sand and sparkling, clean water. It has great waves all year round and is a favorite with kiteboarders and surfers of all levels. Barra, as it is known, is where your beaches-of-Rio experience will be centered. It offers ideal conditions in a safe, attractive and accessible neighborhood.
The trendiest point of Barra is called Praia do Pepê, named after the professional hang glider and surfer Paulo Carneiro Lopes (nicknamed Pepê) who died in a hang gliding accident in 1991. The “Barraca do Pepê” (Pepê’s stand) serves sandwiches and refreshing drinks. Beautiful people and local celebrities frequent this part of Barra, which is crazily packed during the hot summer months. We feel that this is by far the place where the most stunning Brazilian women hang out.
Barra and its surroundings are now the most expanding neighborhoods of Rio, and entertainment is the number one priority there. Enormous shopping malls equipped with state-of-the-art cinemas and bowling alleys offer locals and visitors alike a way to spend a day or two.
For kitesurfers, Barra da Tijuca offers a very large space to launch and land, set up your kites, and provides good crew support and a rescue boat. There is open ocean water, usually medium to big chop and most of the time a left-break of waves. For these reasons, national and international kitesurfing championships are held at Barra several times a year.
Again, as Barra is a relatively new up-and-coming neighborhood, with developments springing up all the time, it is also one of Rio’s safer neighborhoods. Your MaximRio hosts will make sure that you enjoy the some of the world’s best kitesurfing and water-sports, as well as high quality of beach life right here in Barra.
