Arraial do Cabo Marine Reserve is considered to offer the best scuba diving on the Southern coast of Brazil. It has some of the most beautiful beaches of the entire Brazil, with water so transparent it makes you think of paradise.
Located 2 hours by car from Rio de Janeiro, Arraial do Cabo is part of the Costa do Sol (Sunny Coast), which also includes Búzios and Cabo Frio. The turquoise water of Arraial do Cabo is teeming with marine life - turtles, sea horses, moray eels, colorful coral and some exotic tropical fish like the famous Holacanthus Ciliaris. Like Cabo Frio, the temperature of the water in Arraial is low, even during the summer, and the beaches and their pristine green water provide an excellent experience for observing the large variety of ocean wild life.
The town of Arraial do Cabo is surrounded by hills and resembles a fishing village. It has white dunes, sandbanks, lagoons, and beautiful headlands; from Pontal do Atalaias headland you can enjoy a wonderful coastal sunset. Back in the beginning of Brazilian history, Arraial was covered with pau-brazil (brazilwood), a kind of three used to dye fabrics. The wood attracted foreign smugglers, notably Dutch and French and many shipwrecks remain from those historical times. It is estimated that there are 88 wrecks in the area, making it a fantastically-unique area to divers.
At Grande Beach, stretching as far as the horizon in the direction of Saquarema beach, there is drift-net and you can indulge in a late-afternoon drink and a bite to eat in one of the bars or kiosks. For the more energetic travelers, MaximRio suggests exploring one of the many trails, such as the one that leads to the old lighthouse. There are also boat trips which are unforgettable, and MaximRio recommends the one to the Azul grotto, which stops at the Pontal do Atalaia.
