Araruama has some the most butter-flat water we have ever seen and kited on, making it a true paradise for freestyle kiting. Even in 35 knot winds, the water behind the unique natural-shaped sand bar, which stretches over half a mile in the middle of the large lagoon of Araruama Lake, is perfectly flat on one side, providing the ultimate playground for freestyle kite-boarding. A place every kite boarder dreams of, and only a few get to experience.
Some of the world’s best professional kite-boarders are often found riding at Araruama Lake, which usually provides strong thermal winds, making sure you get all your use out of your small kites! On lighter days, Araruama is perfect for kite lessons due to the space, sandy beaches without obstacles, and waist-deep warm water. Amazingly, there is never a crowd and only a handful of kiters are out on any given day. Araruama gets about 4 or 5 windy days per week all year long. Average wind speed is between 15 to 25 knots.
If you are into waves then Cabo Frio is the place for you. Only minutes away, it provides excellent wave riding. In addition, about one hour’s drive further there is Buzios, which also provides fantastic waves.
