Windsurfing in Rio has always been a fun and exciting sport for those who crave an athletic challenge while on vacation! MaximRio will help you get riding, get planning, and you will get hooked! MaximRio has partnered up with local schools that employ experienced English speaking instructors and specialize in lessons and equipment rentals.
Beginner Windsurfing instruction
The daily classes are specifically designed for the beginning windsurfer. The step by step system of land simulation followed by water practice will allow a beginner to learn quickly. The lessons emphasize balance and technique over strength allowing you to learn faster and easier. The school uses the latest in wide style boards that are almost three feet wide, but still are fun to use. Falling is almost a thing of the past, oftentimes the instructor will be sitting on the front of your board assuring immediate and comforting coaching. The sails are light-weight and fitted to your size. Part of your lesson will be learning how to turn around so that you can always make it back to your starting point. Sailing straight across the wind, upwind and downwind with steering are some of the other skills taught in the first session. Your confidence will soar as you begin sailing on your Rio vacation. We guarantee it!
Advanced Windsurfing Instruction
You and your instructor will work on any problems you are encountering, such as getting into your footstraps, getting comfortable with your harness, stopping in the middle of your Carve Jibes or you can simply work on wave riding technigues. The school uses simulators on land to learn the technique and balance, and then we add on-water instruction for the best results. To maximize your time on the water, MaximRio offers excursions in Rio, Araruama, Cabo Frio, and Buzios ensuring you will get the best of your Brazilian windsurfing experience!
Windsurfing overview
For those who’ve never done it before, here’s a little first step and background on wind-surfing:
Windsurfing, or sail-boarding, is a surface water sport using a windsurf board, also commonly called a sailboard, usually two to five meters (6.5 to 16.4 feet) long and powered by the wind pushing on a sail. The rig is connected to the board by a free-rotating flexible universal joint (U-Joint). Unlike a rudder-steered sailboat, a windsurfer is steered by the tilting and rotating of the mast and sail, as well as tilting and carving the board.
The sport combines aspects of both sailing and surfing, along with certain athletic aspects shared with other board sports like skateboarding, snowboarding, waterskiing, and wakeboarding. Although it might be considered a minimalistic version of a sailboat, windsurfing offers experiences that are outside the scope of any other sailing craft design. A windsurfer holds the world speed record for sailing craft (see below); and, windsurfers can perform jumps, inverted loops, spinning maneuvers, and other "freestyle" moves that cannot be matched by any sailboat. Windsurfers were the first to ride the world's largest waves, such as Jaws on the island of Maui, and, with very few exceptions, it was not until the advent of tow-in surfing that waves of that size became accessible to traditional surfers. Windsurfing includes speed sailing, slalom, course racing, wave sailing, superX, and freestyle as distinct disciplines. Though windsurfing is possible in winds from near 0 to 50 knots, the ideal planning conditions for most recreational sailors is 15-25 knots, with lighter winds resulting in displacement mode sailing.
