Rio de Janeiro is one of the surf capitals of Brazil. Rio is an ideal surf location due to the open swells that come from East to South, offering tropical beaches, clean waves, and consistent swell year round. This is why it hosts many surf tournaments and surfers from all around the world come here to surf the many quiet and beautiful beach breaks they have to choose from, varying from beginner to advanced depending on ability level and experience. Due to the geography of Rio, there is constantly good surf at one of the many beaches. MaximRio has chosen 10 favorite surf spots for you!

Maxim's Top 10 Surf Beaches:

Arpoador

By the big rock at the northern end of Ipanema it has one of the best lefts around, but also one of the biggest and most aggressive crowds! Be careful of the undertow, it can be strong with big waves.

Leblon

Although the waves here are easy for beginners, the current can be strong and the water is colder than most other spots. It is kind of the continuation of Ipanema. On the right end side of Leblon you will get an epic session during big south swells.

Prainha

Offers the most powerful waves in Rio, pound this beach in the far south-beyond Recreio dos Bandeirantes. By far this beach is Maxim’s most favorite surf beach with a breath taking setting in world class surfing conditions. Prainha is THE surf beach of Rio, powerful lefts and rights with an amazing surfer’s paradise environment. It can hold 12 to 15ft waves with channels that get out. You may find some localism at Prainha but if you are relaxed with a fun attitude you will be just fine.

Barra

This 18-km stretch of sand is one of the most popular for kite-surfing and surfing and offers phenomenal beach breaks. Praia do Pepe is excellent for kitesurfing on windy days and surfing on less windier days, besides excellent surf you will find a great view of the Tijucas Islands.

Recreio

At the end of Recreio beach is Surfers point. Waves on this long beach break at rocks a few meters from the shore. This is the South end of Barra just over the hill from Macumba, it is great on large south west swells. The south wind blows offshore making it just a perfect spot to surf.

Sao Conrado

The surf here varies but there are usually beach breaks of between 4 and 6 ft. This is where the hang gliders land on the beach in the late afternoons. A shallow and short wave more suitable for body boarders can be found here.

Grumari

The biggest waves in Rio hit Prainha and this beach is just to its south, which tends to be quiet during the week. It is one of the most beautiful beaches in Rio and it is really pristine. Sandy bottom and easy lefts and rights holding a big swell.

Barra Da Guaratiba

This river mouth near Prainha is pounded by perfectly formed, powerful waves making it really great for surfing. It is a thirty minute car ride from Grumari. Currents here are intense but during the right swell this beach is pure classic. At the end of the beach is an army facility making it closed to the general public. Surfers have dreamt for years that one day it will become open for them.

Itaipu

This is one of the most popular beaches in the area for surfing and body boarding.

Itacoatiara

Some of the best and biggest waves in Rio state hit this beach just east of Niteroi.
