Here is what you can expect from your kite vacation in and beyond Rio:
The Wind
In Rio, the wind typically blows port tack cross-shore at varying strengths (14 to 25 knots) throughout the year. The windy season is from August to March, but the strongest wind arrives between October and lasts till February. Rio boasts and average of 5 kitable days per week with consistent conditions. On those non-windy days, you can take advantage of the world class conditions ideal for scuba diving, perfect waves for surfing or flat water for stand-up paddle boarding in some of the most beautiful beaches in the world. The lively resort of Buzios and the Araruama Lagoon (a flat-water sand bar heaven) are good options for off-season kiting and are located less than 2 hours drive away from Rio on smooth and scenic roads. MaximRio can provide transportation to and from Buzios and Araruama and have test centers and schools in both locations. With an average of 270+ kitable days per year in and around Rio, your kite surfing vacation will be amongst the best trips you ever took.
Water and Air Temperature
The seasons in the Southern Hemisphere are exactly opposite of what you might experience in Europe or the United States. The Rio summers are from August to April with temperatures ranging from 27C (80F) to 38C (100F). The water temperatures range from 18C (65F) to about 24C (75F), so no wetsuits are needed in and around Rio for majority of the year!
Waves and Conditions
Rio experiences varying wind and wave conditions. The sea may resemble a Caribbean blue lagoon one day (perfect for Stand-up Paddle boarding SUP) and the very next day the wind may pick up to 20 knots and the sea changes to a Hawaiian-style ocean, with double overhead and very powerful waves providing incredible wave riding! The world class-Barra da Tijuca break provides a perfect playground for 9M to 12m kites.
Launch Area and Kite spots
The main kitesurfing area consists of a long wide beach with unlimited set up space and demarcated area for launching and landing your kite. The only obstacles are beautiful people, however once the big waves and strong winds hit, the beach empty's out and the coastline offers incredible 10-kilometer (6.2 mile) down-winders. As you kitesurf along the beach you feel as if the sun is only a few miles away, while you ride for miles in a endless session that will last you a lifetime of memories. Once your muscles are fully fatigued and you cannot kite further our Kite Instructor will ensure that you quickly return to the launch area. Once back or at countless kiosks along the beach you will enjoy a cold refreshing cerveja or an cold Acaii while snacking on a fresh made chicken sandwich.
If you prefer freestyle you will enjoy MaximRio’s guided excursions to Araruama Lake where you will find some of the flattest water in the world making it a true paradise for freestyle in a waist deep salt water lagoon. Even in 35 knot wind, the water behind the unique natural-shaped sand bar of Araruama Lake is perfectly flat, providing the ultimate playground for freestyle kite-boarding. A picturesque and idyllic place every kiteboarder dreams of and only a few experience. Some of world’s best professional kite-boarders are often found riding at Araruama Lake, a place which typically provides strong thermal wind making sure you get log some serious hours on your small kites! Because this flatwater gem has not yet been brought to the attention of the public kiting community, usually there are only a handful of kiters out on any given day.
