Copacabana is a borough located in the southern zone of Rio de Janeiro, known for its 4 km beach which is one of the most famous of the world.
Copacabana beach is considered the world’s most famous beach. It is affectionately known by the people of Rio as “Princesinha do Mar”, or the Little Princess of the Sea, after a bossa nova song. Copacabana, with its faded glory, is still a symbol of Rio’s tradition and glamour. The black and white curve design of its wide walkway is recognized all over the world.
Copacabana begins at Princesa Isabel Avenue and ends at Posto Seis (lifeguard watchtower Six). Beyond Copacabana, there are two small beaches, one inside Fort Copacabana and other, right after it: Diabo Beach. There are historic forts at both ends of Copacabana beach; Fort Copacabana, built in 1914, is at the south end by Posto Seis and Fort Duque de Caxias, built in 1779, at the north end.
The sands of Copacabana are the stage for grand events such as world beach soccer and volleyball championships, concerts that gather up to one million people (such as the Rolling Stones and Madonna) and the world’s biggest New Year party, drawing more than two million revelers every year. Your MaximRio host can show you as much of Copacabana as you’d like to see, so you can feel first-hand what it’s like to be where some of the world’s craziest parties have taken place.
